ABOUT HER WRITING
WNBA’s Helen Darling pens “Hide N Seek Monday” Book aims to teach children days of the week. SAN ANTONIO—Many of Helen Darling’s accomplishments have come in the form of dishing out career-high assists or scoring the winning basket at the buzzer. In August of 2007, Darling, a point guard with the WNBA San Antonio Silver Stars, unveiled a project she’d been working on for some time now— a new children’s book. Darling officially became an author during a book signing at San Antonio’s Fan shop, Aug. 17th, 2007 when her children's book, "Hide N Seek Monday,” was released to the public.
ABOUT HELEN DARLING
Helen Darling was born and raised in Columbus, Ohio. She has a degree in kinesiology with a teaching certificate from Pennsylvania State University. Darling leverages her college degree in instructional teaching to write books that teach new principles while reinforcing the fundamentals, and uses her creativity to help children learn in a fun, creative way. Darling was an outstanding athlete at Penn State where her hard work and determination landed her in the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) 2000 draft being picked up by the Cleveland Rockers. She played in Cleveland four years, sitting out one year to give birth to her triplets. Darling returned one year after giving birth to her triplets.
In 2003 the team folded and Darling was picked up by the Minnesota Lynx. She played her 2004 season with the Minnesota Lynx and was traded to the Charlotte Sting in 2005. Darling played two years with Charlotte and after the Sting folded she was picked up by the San Antonio Silver Stars. May 2009 will be Darling’s 9th season in the WNBA and her 3rd consecutive season with the San Antonio Silver Stars. In the nine years playing in the WNBA, Darling has been very active in the community. She is a two-time winner of the WNBA community assist award. While in Cleveland, she was a spokesperson for the March of Dimes, and is currently the Silver Stars’ Read-To-Achieve spokesperson in San Antonio. Darling is an advocate for literacy. She travels to schools reading and speaking to children about the importance of reading.
“I am a mother of triplets with a degree in education, so education is big in my home,” Darling says. “We do activities everyday, all of which are somehow a learning tool. I’ve been to several book stores but I haven’t found many books about the days of the week. My work is different because it’s about my triplet’s adventures helping children associate an activity with a day of the week.” In the off-season, Darling lives in Memphis, Tenn., with her family, Orlando Tot, and triplets JaJuan, Jalen, and Nevaeh born April 13, 2002.
